COURSE DESCRIPTION

Learning objectives

1. Be able to understand the complex environment where health systems are inmerse. 2. Students can analize common challenges for health systems despite economic development in countries where they are implemented. 3. Students understand the political and policy process behind health policies. Therefore, why health policies not necessarily seek the best for population health is the main question I like students discuss. 4. Students understand the historical background and current organization of the Chilean health systems. 5. Students explicit their social background on what they understand for health and how a health systems should looks like. Its arrangements and relationships with other sectors and social policies.


Major topics covered

The program is designed in three units, and this is the first one: health systems and policy. Topics: 1.What is a health system? The workshop seeks to explore what students really think about a healtyh systems goal regarding population health. In the same way, pursue go depper on what principles and values are shared by students regarding their different cultural backgrounds and political ideologies. 2. Health systems and policies. The lecture focuses on analyse health systems frameworks and health systems in high, low, and middle income countries. The learning objetive is that students can analize common challenges for health systems despite economic development in countries where they are implemented. 3. Health policy analysis. Through a number of hyphotetical policy options, the students conduct policy analysis and stakeholder analysis. The learning objetive is that students understand the political and policy process behind health policies. Therefore, why health policies not necessarily seek the best for population health is the main question I like students discuss. 4. The Chilean health system. The learning objective is students understand the historical background and current organization of the Chilean health systems. 5. Designing a health system. This workshop has as a learning objective that students explicit their social background on what they understand for health and how a health systems should looks like. Its arrangements and relationships with other sectors and social policies. 6. Essay or case study research. The grading system seeks to measure the students capability for take a position based on their own ideas about health systems and policies. These ideas are graded based in the way they wre communicated instead the instructor personal ideas on the topic.
